The Fifth Season
I devoured The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. Which is hardly surprising considering the author has won awards on top of awards. This is book one in the Broken Earth series, dystopian sci-fi with heavy science fantasy elements. I saw the book described as "intricate" somewhere, and it is definitely that. Meticulously plotted, with twist after twist. You probably got this from the "dystopian" label, but there's a lot of darkness in this story. It is not a breezy summer read. But the worldbuilding is just staggering, and the storytelling will keep you turning pages. I am late to the party in reading this series, so I'm maybe telling you nothing you don't already know, but if you're a sci-fi/fantasy fan and haven't yet read it, I highly recommend it.
